What is Ajo?
Ajo is a Yoruba word for saving together. In Nigeria it’s used for two different arrangements. One is a rotating group, where members pay the same amount each round and take turns collecting the full contribution. The other is daily savings with an alajo, a collector who keeps savings for traders and others.
In the UK, many Nigerians simply call the rotating kind “contribution” or “thrift”. Throw is for the rotating kind, between people who already know each other.
How an Ajo contribution works
- Contribution
- The fixed amount each member pays every round.
- Collection
- Your turn to receive everyone’s contribution for that round.
- Organiser
- The person who sets the amount and the order, and follows up on late payments.
- Round
- One weekly, fortnightly or monthly period. The Ajo ends when every member has collected once.

Planning around your collection date
People often join an Ajo with something specific in mind: rent, school fees, a business purchase, a trip home. Knowing your collection date from the start is what makes that planning work.
- See your date before you join. The invite shows the amount, how often, how many members and how the order is decided.
- Know exactly what you’ll pay. Throw shows the total you’ll put in over the whole Ajo and the amount you’ll collect.
- Need a different date? Ask another member to swap. The swap only happens if they agree.
- Collect without chasing. When it’s your turn, each member’s contribution comes from their bank straight to yours.
How Throw helps your Ajo
- Contributions go bank to bankMembers approve each payment in their own banking app. The money goes to the person collecting, never to Throw.
- Everyone sees who has paidThe organiser doesn’t have to post a list in the group chat. The record is already there.
- Reminders before each due dateThrow sends them, so the organiser doesn’t have to.
- Weekly, fortnightly or monthlySet the rhythm your group already uses.
Throw never holds the money and doesn’t guarantee or cover missed payments. Payments are started by Yapily Connect Ltd, authorised by the FCA (FRN 827001). Read how Throw works, step by step, or see plans and pricing.
Ajo questions
Is Throw an alajo or a thrift company?
No. Throw never collects or keeps anyone’s savings. Each contribution goes from one member’s bank account to another’s, and Throw keeps the shared record.
Does Throw hold our money?
No. Every contribution goes from the payer’s bank account straight to the member receiving the pot that cycle. Throw records the payment and shows its status. The only money paid to Throw is its own fee.
What if someone doesn’t pay?
Throw reminds them before the due date and tells the organiser when a payment is late. The rules your group agrees at the start decide the grace period and what happens next, and everything is recorded where the whole group can see it.
Members can ask for more time, swap turns or hand their place to someone else. Throw doesn’t cover missed payments.
Can family abroad join?
For now, everyone pays in pounds from a UK bank account. Members abroad can’t pay through Throw yet.
Does anyone pay or earn interest?
No. Throw doesn’t lend money and nobody earns interest on the pot. Each member gets back exactly what the group puts in for their turn. The only cost is Throw’s flat fee, which is shown before anyone joins.
Is Throw on Android?
