What is a committee?

In Pakistan and India, a committee (kameti in Punjabi and Urdu) is a rotating savings group. Members pay a fixed amount every month and take the full amount in turn. It’s often run by one trusted person who keeps the list in a notebook or on their phone.

In India, formal chit funds are regulated businesses run by companies. A committee among people you know is different, and so is Throw: Throw doesn’t run the committee or hold the money. It gives the group a shared schedule and record.

Committee, kameti, BC: what Throw supports

Committee / kameti
Fixed monthly amount, fixed or drawn order, everyone receives once. Throw runs this.
Your own word
Call it kameti, BC or anything else when you set it up. Throw uses your word in reminders and receipts.
Bidding BC
Some committees auction each month’s amount. Throw doesn’t run bidding or interest.
Setting up a group in Throw: the screen asks what your community calls it, with Committee among the options alongside Susu, Pardner, Ajo, Esusu, Tontine and Daret.

Moving your committee from the notebook to Throw

  1. Create the committee. Set the monthly amount and the number of members, and choose how the order is set.
  2. Invite everyone on WhatsApp. One link to the family or office group.
  3. Each member adds their receiving account. So their turn lands in the right place.
  4. Start it. From then on, reminders go out and the list updates itself as people pay.

Committee questions

Can I call it kameti in the app?

Yes. Choose Committee, or type your own word, and Throw uses it everywhere in your group.

Is Throw a chit fund?

No. Throw doesn’t run the committee, take bids or hold anyone’s money. Members pay each other directly, bank to bank, and Throw keeps the record.

Does anyone pay or earn interest?

No. Throw doesn’t lend money and nobody earns interest on the pot. Each member gets back exactly what the group puts in for their turn. The only cost is Throw’s flat fee, which is shown before anyone joins.

Does Throw hold our money?

No. Every contribution goes from the payer’s bank account straight to the member receiving the pot that cycle. Throw records the payment and shows its status. The only money paid to Throw is its own fee.

What if someone doesn’t pay?

Throw reminds them before the due date and tells the organiser when a payment is late. The rules your group agrees at the start decide the grace period and what happens next, and everything is recorded where the whole group can see it.

Members can ask for more time, swap turns or hand their place to someone else. Throw doesn’t cover missed payments.

What does it cost?

£1.49 per member per month on Standard, or £2.49 on Plus, for the length of the circle. It’s charged once at the start with one bank approval, so there are no monthly charges. The organiser can run the group for free.
