What is a tontine?

In French-speaking West and Central Africa, from Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire to Cameroon and the Congo, a tontine is a savings group where members pay a set amount each round and take the full sum in turn. In anglophone Cameroon you’ll also hear njangi. Many tontines are social too, with regular meetings and support for members’ family events.

This is different from the historical European tontine, a 17th-century annuity scheme named after Lorenzo de Tonti. On Throw, a tontine means the rotating savings group.

Kinds of tontine, and which ones Throw runs

Rotating, fixed order
Everyone pays each round and the pot goes to each member in an agreed order. Throw runs this.
Rotating, drawn order
The order is drawn at random at the start. Throw runs this too.
With bidding
Some tontines auction each round’s pot to the member who offers the most. Throw doesn’t run bidding or interest.

From the group chat to Throw

  1. Create the tontine. Choose the amount, weekly, fortnightly or monthly, and how the order is set.
  2. Invite the group. Share one link in WhatsApp. Members join with the invite code.
  3. Everyone adds where their pot should land. Each member adds the bank account that will receive their turn.
  4. Start, and let the reminders run. Members pay from their own bank each round, and everyone sees who has paid.

How Throw helps your Tontine

  • No cash changes handsEach member pays from their own bank to the person receiving. Throw never holds it.
  • Everyone sees the same recordWho has paid, who has received and what’s next.
  • A group room for messagesEach tontine has its own room for updates and decisions, next to the record.
  • Clear rules from the startGrace days and what happens when someone is late are agreed when the tontine is created.

Throw never holds the money and doesn’t guarantee or cover missed payments. Payments are started by Yapily Connect Ltd, authorised by the FCA (FRN 827001). Read how Throw works, step by step, or see plans and pricing.

Tontine questions

Is Throw available in French?

Not yet. The app is in English for now.

Can we run a tontine with bidding?

No. Throw doesn’t support auctions or interest. The order is fixed by the organiser or drawn at random.

Can members in France or Belgium join?

Not yet. For now, everyone pays in pounds from a UK bank account.

Does Throw hold our money?

No. Every contribution goes from the payer’s bank account straight to the member receiving the pot that cycle. Throw records the payment and shows its status. The only money paid to Throw is its own fee.

What if someone doesn’t pay?

Throw reminds them before the due date and tells the organiser when a payment is late. The rules your group agrees at the start decide the grace period and what happens next, and everything is recorded where the whole group can see it.

Members can ask for more time, swap turns or hand their place to someone else. Throw doesn’t cover missed payments.

What does it cost?

£1.49 per member per month on Standard, or £2.49 on Plus, for the length of the circle. It’s charged once at the start with one bank approval, so there are no monthly charges. The organiser can run the group for free.
